1885 Queen Anne Painted Lady
I rarely do Painted Lady houses because they are extremely difficult to do, cost the homeowner 2-3 times my regular fee and still not worth the amount of analyzing I need to do. Seriously – I need to spend a lot of time just studying the house and how the construction of the trim details. There is a logic to color placement and it is difficult to follow and see if a house like this has the colors in the right places. With all the color confusion maybe it doesn’t really matter to most people but it should. The blue is the before photo. I avoid using blue since it is not a historic color. There were some color placement issues I fixed although no one would probably even notice them. Can you find them and win a prize? Only kidding! If I wasn’t that busy it may be fun to do. This is a great house and the property is also beautiful and well cared for by a very good homeowner and steward of a historic building.

1873 Queen Anne in Michigan
Paint placement is the most common problem almost all houses have. Simple houses have them and Victorians have even more.

1880 Queen Anne Victorian with Clown Colors
This 1880 home was painted in bright cheap looking clown colors before the house was sold. It’s not so much the bright garish colors but the use of white on the windows and the gable. First the windows are actually painted teal to match the trim and the storm windows are white. Both the main window and the storm window must match. Additionally the window should be a contrasting color to the trim. This is an unfinished look for an old house. It’s like wearing pants without a belt. Something is missing and it looks sloppy. I wonder if the previous homeowners looked the same.
Scope of Work
- New paint colors.
