Is vinyl siding saving the forest?
Should we feel guilty for using wood?
Here is a great video that answers this question very well.

I am buying the paint shaver from a company in Cranston RI to begin the process of removing paint/stain from my home that has cedar clapboard siding that is peeling and cracking,
The plan is to remove all paint down to the bare cedar wood.
I refinish wood floors for a living so I know a little about sanding and finishing.
My question is this:
If I am going through all the work to strip and finish my home I want to use the best product to hold up for as long as possible.
I love linseed oil on interior projects, would a penetrating oil stain be better than an acrylic product?
I know that is is getting harder and harder to find oil products but I know in flooring finishes I still like the look of an oil finished floor over a waterbased finish.
Any thoughts on this?
I really do not know. It’s usually oil based primer and 2 coats of latex paint. I know that linseed oil paints and European paints are supposed to last longer. As for paint versus stain, I would go with paint to form a protective coat and also a semi-gloss will appear cleaner and easier to clean. Dirt will stick to the stain more as with a flat paint. I would talk to someone in a good paint store – not big box stores.
Thank you for your input, I appreciate you getting back to me.
Thanks so much Ken, I am lucky I have a few really local paint supply stores near me.
I went into one yesterday and the sales clerk gave me a lot of good advice. It pretty much matched what you recommended!
I took a trip up to Road Island last weekend and the sales rep from the paint shaver (a tool that was mentioned somewhere on you site) was nice enough to meet me at his shop to give me a demo of that tool.
It is worth every penny.
Thanks for the advice,
Ole
