Wouldn’t you like to know who built your house, the names of all the owners throughout the years, their children, their occupation, when they planted that big tree in the backyard, why they put on that addition, what colors they painted the house, and why in God’s name did they ever paint that chestnut woodwork white!!!!!
Life happens, and if only those walls could talk! If you only knew earlier that those holes in the woodwork you repaired where from bullets and that low area in the garden you just filled in is where the bodies are buried. Maybe this is an extreme case but maybe not.
I am happy to announce a new webpage has been added to the OldHouseGuy website.
This page will outline how to document your history and further research the history of your house, its residents, and understand the importance to do this now.
Click here and check it out and find out why you really need to do this now.

Fantastic, detailed article that covers many perspectives. I like that you highlighted both the property history and the personal and persons history. I am going to post a page to my http://www.HandPaintedWoodSigns.com web site to alert readers to your page. Many who contact me for a historic house sign plaque have the personal family history but this will help the ones who don’t have it. One thing I’d like to add, having done deed histories on my own properties, is to check your local library for a hanging vertical file of newspaper clippings that good librarians have maintained. It usually contains pictures and such that can reveal photos of your old house. Great article!
