The Mayor’s Historic Preservation Award Winner
Awards are nice and the homeowner had the best of intentions but it is evident that award was issued by a mayor who is not an architect nor has much knowledge of historic buildings. As with most awards, the more colors you toss around randomly, the more pleasing it is to those that do not understand architecture. Aside from the ice cream cone gable, there is a mistake made my many homeowners.
This house may look cutesy but it is a good example of what NOT to do with accent colors. Take notice especially on the 2nd floor balcony. Notice the red accented spandrels at the top and the center of the post painted red.
Using red at such a contrast to the ivory makes the decorative features disappear. They are painted out. The porch posts look like stubs. This is an example where less would be more. Try to reduce the temptation to go overboard with a Victorian.
