## Clapboard Confusion

  |

If installing clapboard one way is good, 4 ways are probably better? What a mess!
Also notice the double Victorian doors watching like large eyeballs. Don’t do this
at home folks!

## The Mayor’s Historic Preservation Award Winner

  |

 |

 |

![](http://www.oldhouseguy.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/ice-cream-cone-gable-house1-600x400.jpg)

  |

Awards are nice and the homeowner had the best of intentions but it is evident that
award was issued by a mayor who is not an architect nor has much knowledge of historic
buildings. As with most awards, the more colors you toss around randomly, the more
pleasing it is to those that do not understand architecture. Aside from the ice
cream cone gable, there is a mistake made my many homeowners.

This house may look cutesy but it is a good example of what NOT to do with accent
colors. Take notice especially on the 2nd floor balcony. Notice the red accented
spandrels at the top and the center of the post painted red.

Using red at such a contrast to the ivory makes the decorative features disappear.
They are painted out. The porch posts look like stubs. This is an example where
less would be more. Try to reduce the temptation to go overboard with a Victorian.

[⌊Keeping Warm in an Old House⌉](http://www.oldhouseguy.com/keeping-warm-old-house/)

Keeping warm in an old house may be a no-brainer for some. Why not just turn up
the thermostat? For me, I prefer to save energy and the environment and money to
use for something more fun. Today we are spoiled with the ease of automatic thermostats
and comfortable climate controlled rooms. As recent as the early 1900’s depending
on …
