Historic house restoration in need!
Many people would look at this 19th century house and admire it and be satisfied with it as you see in the photo.
But Dan Miller, a retired teacher and his wife knew there was beauty hidden under the aluminum siding just waiting to escape.
What wasn’t covered up with aluminum was lost during early remodeling when the porch was enclosed. But the Millers understood the architecture of the house so they could design a porch that would be right for the house and a full historic house restoration was underway.
Dan’s wife designed the porch using designs from other porches in the area. Full scale mockups of the details were made to get the scale right.
For the porch apron, Dan made four mockups and let neighbors vote on which one they liked best.
Dan who also has a small woodworking business made the porch parts in the winter. The whole porch took a summer to complete with the help of a contractor to reinforce floor joists, make the roof, etc.
This is truly an amazing transformation.

wow! Amazing transformation!!
Beautiful! I think it needs shutters. But these can always be added. I love the railing, balustrades, and the color of the trim and window frames. NICE.
You are pretty perceptive. It had shutters. We have about 50% of them in the attic of the house. We would have put them on the front but they were not all there.
I love to hear when someone puts a house back to the way it should be! Thanks for your blog – it’s inspiring and helpful!
